As much as I like to code, I love the visual elements that come with a new project. From the design phase down to logos and icons, its the visuals that get me excited. Nothing like the sweet smell of a blank sheet of paper.

First off, start with a good colour palette. Spend a bit of time finding the right colour combinations that convey the essence of the app or site you’re building. Take a look at Kuler (https://kuler.adobe.com) to get a whole boat load of themes you can use. You can tweak a theme and build your own if you like and once you’re done, you can copy the RGB or HEX values for each colour.

Secondly, graphics tools. I’ve always been a huge CorelDraw fan but over the recent years I’ve shifted away from the PC and to the Mac – CorelDraw is PC only. I wanted a native Mac drawing app and stumbled on to Sketch (http://www.bohemiancoding.com/sketch). This is an awesome vector based drawing app that I use create diagrams, icons and even my business cards.

Need a bitmap image app? Try Pixelmator (http://www.pixelmator.com/).
